Impact of Cold Ambient Conditions on Cold Start and Idle Emissions from Diesel Engines

The cold start performance of a diesel engine has been receiving more attention as the European Commission emission regulations directed to include cold start emissions in the legislative emission driving cycles. The cold start performance of diesel engines is influenced by the ambient temperature conditions, engine design, fuel, lubricant and engine operating conditions. The present research work investigates the effect of cold ambient conditions on the diesel engine's performance and the exhaust emission (gaseous and particulate emissions) characteristics during the cold start and followed by idle. The engine startability and idling tests were carried out on the latest generation of diesel engine in a cold cell at various ambient temperatures ranging between +20°C and −20°C. Higher fuel consumption and peak speed were observed at very cold ambient compared to those at normal ambient during the cold start.

Numerical Investigation of GDI Injector Nozzle Geometry on Spray Characteristics

The large eddy simulation (LES) with Volume of Fluid (VOF) interface tracking method in Ansys-FLUENT has been used to study the effects of nozzle hole geometrical parameters on gasoline direct injection (GDI) fuel injectors, namely the effect of inner hole length/diameter (L/D) ratio and counter-bore diameters on near field spray characteristics. Using iso-octane as a model fuel at the fuel injection pressure of 200 bar, the results showed that the L/D ratio variation of the inner hole has a more significant influence on the spray characteristics than the counter-bore diameter variation. Reducing the L/D ratio effectively increases the mass flow rate, velocity, spray angle and reduces the droplet size and breakup length. The increased spray angle results in wall impingements inside the counter-bore cavity, particularly for L/D=1 which can potentially lead to increased deposit accumulation inside fuel injectors.

Study of Effects of Deposit Formation on GDi Injector and Engine Performance

Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) vehicles now make up the majority of European new car sales and a significant share of the existing car parc. Despite delivering measurable engine efficiency benefits, GDI fuel systems are not without issues. Fuel injectors are susceptible to the formation of deposits in and around the injector nozzles holes. It is widely reported that these deposits can affect engine performance and that different fuels can alleviate the buildup of those deposits. This project aims to understand the underlying mechanisms of how deposit formation ultimately leads to a reduction in vehicle performance. Ten GDI fuel injectors, with differing levels of coking were taken from engine testing and consumer vehicles and compared using a range of imaging and engine tests. At the time of writing, a new GDI engine test is being developed by the Co-ordinating European Council (CEC) to be used by the fuel and fuel additive industry.

New CEC Gasoline Direct Injection Fuels Test - Comparison of Deposits and Spray Performance from New and Used Injectors

The use of deposit control additives in European market gasoline is well documented for maintaining high levels of engine cleanliness and subsequent sustained fuel and emissions performance. Co-ordinating European Council (CEC) industry fuels tests have played a crucial role in helping to drive market relevant, effective and low-cost deposit control additives into European market fuels. Until now, there hasn’t been a Gasoline Direct Injection engine test available to fuel marketers in any market globally. However, a new CEC engine test is currently being developed to address that gap. Based on an in-house VW injector coking test, it shows promise for becoming a useful tool with which to develop and measure the performance of deposit control additives. A key requirement of industry tests should be to replicate issues seen in consumer vehicles, thereby providing a platform for relevant solutions.

Understanding Interaction between Reactive Jets in Pre-Chamber Ignition of Gaseous Fuel

In order to improve the ignition capacity and burning rate for spark-ignited engines, pre-chamber jet ignition is a promising technique to achieve fast premixed combustion and low pollutant emissions. However, few studies focus on the interaction between multiple reacting (i.e. flamelet) or reacted (i.e. radical) jets, its effect on ignition, exotherm and flow behaviors also remain to be revealed. This paper investigated two types of jet interaction under different pre-chamber structures, including the jet-crossing and unequal nozzle designs. Optical experiments under different conditions were conducted in a constant volume combustion chamber with CH4 as fuel, using simultaneous high speed schlieren and OH* chemiluminescence method. Meanwhile, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations with CH4 and NH3/CH4 blend fuels were carried out using Converge software to provide further insights of turbulent flow and ignition process.

Droplet Measurement of High-Pressure Liquid Ammonia Injection Using PDPA

Liquid ammonia is an ideal zero carbon fuel to reduce carbon emission of internal combustion engines. The high-pressure injection of liquid ammonia is a key technology to fast distribute fuels and prepare better combustion performances. The physical properties of liquid ammonia are different to traditional fossil fuels including diesel and gasoline, which can change the spray and droplet characteristics significantly. However, the spray droplet characteristics of liquid ammonia injection is lack of investigations. In this paper, Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer (PDPA) are used to measure the droplet diameter and velocity of high-pressure liquid ammonia sprays up to 75 MPa and compare to diesel sprays. Effects of flash boiling of liquid ammonia droplet characteristics are also analyzed.

Effects of fuel properties on under-expansion behaviors of flash-boiling jets

The rapid phase change of flash boiling jets would induce under-expansion and affect the spray characteristics, but there is lack of investigations on fuel properties on under-expansion behaviors of flash boiling jets. In this study, high-speed microscopic Schlieren photography was used to capture the near- field shock wave of methanol, ethanol, n-hexane and iso-octane jets under varied conditions. Results demonstrate that the shock size, in terms of shock length and width, are influenced by gas dynamics and thermodynamics of the fuel. An artificial neural network (ANN) was constructed using the key influential parameters, and the predicted results of the optimal models with coefficient of determination exceeding 0.99 are consistent with the experimental results of methanol, indicating that ANN can predict shock size within flash boiling jets and obtains good prediction capability.

SOME CRITICAL TECHNICAL ISSUES ON THE STEADY FLOW TESTING OF CYLINDER HEADS

There are considerable diversities in the techniques used for the steady flow testing of engine cylinder heads, and this paper presents and discusses the important issues involved in the flow bench experiment. The work aims to provide information necessary for setting up or upgrading the experimental system of cylinder head testing. The definitions of discharge/flow coefficients and swirl/tumble ratios are compared and examined, followed by the principles of selecting the test conditions such as pressure drop and flow rate. Techniques for measuring the angular flow momentum in cylinders are discussed and the link between the steady flow parameters and the engine combustion performance is highlighted. Some conclusions and recommendations are drawn from the discussion.

Hybrid Operation Characteristics and Their Impact on Engine Oil Requirements

With the increasing regulatory stringency on emission reduction and efficiency improvement, the automotive industry has experienced a significant shift in the hardware platform. Among technology candidates, hybrid technology is still considered one of the most viable approaches to meet the regulation requirement (both emission and efficiency) at an affordable cost to both the customer and the manufacturer. New engine operating characteristics are expected in hybrid applications which would potentially result in different performance requirements for the engine oil. Therefore, it is crucial to understand those characteristics of a hybrid powertrain, from which the insights of fluid requirements can be derived. A hybrid vehicle test study was conducted to evaluate the engine operation of different kinds of hybrid platforms. The hybrid operation has been well characterized by thoroughly analyzing parameters on each engine.
